Keele University was founded in 1949 as the University College of North Staffordshire by Lord Lindsay, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, and received its Charter as the University of Keele in 1962. It describes itself as the first new university of the 20th century.
Its 600-acre campus in Staffordshire has student accommodation, teaching buildings, restaurants and cafés, a sports centre and a medical centre. Keele is about an hour from Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool and an hour and a half from London, and the nearby town of Newcastle-under-Lyme is 15 minutes away by bus. The university has three faculties and more than 15,000 students.
Keele is one of only 15 broad-based universities in England to have been awarded Gold in both the 2017 and 2023 Teaching Excellence Framework. It is ranked 54th in the Complete University Guide 2027, 55th in the Guardian University Guide 2027 and 46th in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2027. In REF 2021, 80% of its research was rated world-leading or internationally excellent.
On-campus accommodation is guaranteed for all September-start international students who apply by 30 June, with the option to live on campus for the whole course. International students can receive Global Scholarships of up to £5,000 (undergraduate) and £6,000 (postgraduate).
