The University of Huddersfield traces its origins to the Young Men’s Mental Improvement Society, founded in 1841, and became a university in 1992. It is in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, between Leeds and Manchester. Both cities are a short train ride away, and London is about three and a half hours by car.
The main Queensgate campus is a 10-minute walk from Huddersfield railway station, and health courses such as nursing, midwifery and physiotherapy are taught nearby at the National Health Innovation Campus on the Southgate site. The university has five academic schools and more than 650 courses, and around 20,000 students, including over 4,000 international students from more than 100 countries (HESA 2022/23). It also has a London campus, where international students can take selected business and computing degrees.
In the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF 2023) it was rated Gold overall and Gold for both student experience and student outcomes. It is ranked 68th out of 130 in the Complete University Guide 2027 and 521st in the QS World University Rankings 2027, and was placed first in the world for SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and SDG 1 (No Poverty) in the Times Higher Education Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026.
The £22.5 million Student Central building brings library, computing, sport, leisure and eating space together at the heart of campus. Accommodation is arranged through HudLets, the Students’ Union’s approved accommodation service, with halls, studios and shared houses.
