The University of Winchester traces its roots to 1840, when the Church of England founded the Winchester Diocesan Training School to train teachers. It became King Alfred’s College in 1928, gained degree-awarding powers as University College Winchester in 2004 and received university title in 2005. Today it has five faculties and close to 8,000 students.
Its compact campus is within walking distance of the centre of Winchester, England’s ancient capital, in Hampshire, and about an hour from London. Student life centres on the King Alfred Quarter, with the award-winning King Alfred Centre, the Martial Rose Library (over 300,000 books) and the St Alphege teaching building; the nearby West Downs Quarter houses the Business School and the West Downs Centre with its 250-seat auditorium.
Winchester holds a Silver award in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF 2023). HESA Graduate Outcomes figures published in August 2026 show 90.1% of its graduates in work and/or further study, placing it 12th of 106 English universities.
Full-time first-year undergraduates are guaranteed a room in University accommodation if they make Winchester their firm choice and apply by the deadline. The West Downs, Queens Road and Burma Road student villages are within walking distance of teaching buildings, and on-campus rent includes bills, Wi-Fi and 24/7 security. The University works with Oxford International Education Group on international applications and fee payments.
